CHRISTCHURCH ART GALLERY, New Zealand

The Christchurch Art Gallery is the largest art institution in the South Island and is located in the centre of Christchurch's cultural precinct.  Opened in 2003, Marshall Day Acoustics is proud to be associated with the acoustical design of this important civic building.

The gallery contains nine exhibition areas, a reference and study library, multi-purpose auditorium, education workrooms, underground car-parking, restaurant and retail outlets and extensive collection storage space.  Stringent acoustic criteria were placed on each space.

The building included a number of interesting challenges, such as dealing with the main public toilets directly above the auditorium - a space which itself was required to function acoustically for "absolutely any" function.  The large atrium with curved glass walls was required to have excellent speech intelligibility during functions with up to 800 people.  These challenging acoustic requirements required careful design of room surfaces and sound insulation.

The Gallery's aim is to educate, inspire discovery and preserve the legacy of artistic achievement for the people of Canterbury and New Zealand.  Marshall Day Acoustics is proud to have delivered a project that is acoustically designed to meet these needs.
