WAITAKERE AQUATIC CENTRE, Auckland, New Zealand

Waitakere Aquatic Centre was originally built as a performance venue for the XIVth Commonwealth Games, of 1990. The centre included a world class performance pool and diving facility and following the games was used as a competition venue for regional, national and international events.

The aquatic centre was expanded in 2002 with a range of modern leisure facilities including leisure/wave pool, hydro slide, hydrotherapy pool and a new fitness centre.

Considerable effort was made by the design team to create an environment that evokes the local Waitakere Ranges from the huge stone wall and waterfall/dam to the free-flowing pool shapes suggestive of rock pools and mountain streams.

Marshall Day Acoustic was involved both as part of the building design team and in the assessment of environmental noise effects.

Of special concern was the design of the internal absorptive treatment for the pool required to provide an internal environment that would compliment the architectural and artistic intent.  Following successful completion of the new facility, MDA was also involved in the design of internal treatment for the renovation of the competition pool.
