Xi'an Concert Hall

Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi Province, has been a centre of cultural significance for more than 3,100 years, serving as the capital of 13 Chinese dynasties. Today, the city is reaffirming its role as a major educational, industrial and cultural hub.

Xi’an Concert Hall forms the performance focus of the Great Tang All Day Mall Cultural Square, a modern Tang-style development located near the medieval city walls. While the exterior incorporates traditional architectural elements, the building houses a contemporary auditorium designed to provide a world-class venue for symphony orchestras.

The classic shoe-box style concert hall seats 1,250 patrons and offers an intimate listening environment for orchestral concerts and chamber music recitals. The hall features a 4-manual, 60-stop pipe organ by German organ builder Orgelbau Klais.

Our scope

Marshall Day Acoustics was involved in all aspects of the room acoustic design, from concept development through to commissioning. This included detailed room acoustic analysis using 3D computer modelling and Odeon software to predict absorption and scattering characteristics.

A key challenge was designing an auditorium suitable for large orchestras while accommodating a relatively modest audience size. The resulting interior design integrates specially designed acoustic diffusion within the architectural form of the hall.

A high proportion of diffusive surfaces and reflective elements around the stage platform provides superior clarity and ensemble conditions, delivering consistent sound quality throughout the auditorium. MDA also undertook an acoustic design review of smaller performance spaces within the facility.

Congratulations on the acoustics for Xi’an Concert Hall. We’ve played in many a hall in China since first concerts there in Shanghai 1983. This past summer we had the pleasure of returning to Xi’an for the first time in 15 years, performing for the first time in the new hall. It was a superior experience. My colleagues and I would say the best acoustics in China. Bravo!
