Ara Tūhono - Pūhoi to Warkworth Motorway

The project involved the realignment of the existing State Highway 1 (SH1) between Pūhoi in the south and just north of Warkworth.

The new alignment was developed in a greenfield environment and has a total length of 18.5 km. The upgrade resulted in a new four-lane dual carriageway, designed and constructed to motorway standards and saves travelers up to 20 minutes on a return journey. The road opened for public use in June 2023.

Our Scope

Marshall Day Acoustics was engaged to undertake assessment of construction and traffic noise and vibration for the project. A new designation was sought, which included flexible designation conditions that will allow future contractors to use best practice to construct and operate the road.

We provided expert evidence during a Board of Inquiry hearing and assisted with the formulation of designation conditions relating to acoustics. Following the consenting process, we assisted with the project construction and conducted a post-construction compliance assessment for traffic noise levels for the PPP.

CHALLENGES

The road was planned to pass through a currently rural and greenfield area, with existing residents expressing concerns about potential environmental impacts such as noise and vibration. The Board of Inquiry instructed the project team to meet with every submitter to listen to their concerns and respond where necessary. These meetings took place both immediately before and throughout the hearing, leading to modifications to the project while evidence was being presented.

The construction noise effects were noted by several neighbouring residents and intensive consultation and engagement was required to assist with the smooth delivery of the Project.
