The Concourse
The Concourse is one of the most comprehensive cultural infrastructure projects undertaken by an Australian local government authority. Located on Sydney’s North Shore, the development combines a performing arts centre, outdoor amphitheatre, library, shops, cafés and restaurants within a large open-space civic precinct.
Developed for Willoughby City Council, the performance facilities accommodate both world-class performances, and local school / community productions. The Concourse includes a concert hall, proscenium arch theatre, banquet and exhibition hall (Civic Pavilion), and rehearsal spaces, each with distinct functional and acoustic requirements.

Our Scope
Marshall Day Acoustics was responsible for the acoustic design across all performance and rehearsal spaces, the Civic Pavilion, and the library. Our work included sound insulation, room acoustics for each venue, and design of vibration-isolated steel structures for vertically stacked performance spaces to ensure acoustic separation.
CHALLENGES
The constrained site presented significant challenges in controlling both external traffic noise and mechanical plant noise within the auditoria. These environmental noise issues were addressed through isolation of mechanical plant and the use of high-performance sound insulation to protect performance spaces from external noise sources.

“It has the most beautiful sound and there is a roundness and richness to it, resulting in a great warmth and gentleness... It is of a quality that any artist would be pleased to perform there.”
“...a clear, crisp response that was neither boomy nor overly generous...we were very pleased with the acoustic...they got this one right...”
