Venues Unlocked - Soundproofing for Live Music Venues

The NSW Government committed to supporting the state's live music industry by providing acoustic assessment services to live music venues, alongside financial support to implement the measures needed to comply with sound regulations.

The Venues Unlocked Soundproofing for Live Music Venues Grant program is the mechanism for delivering this support, and MDA was appointed to assess six live music venues under Stage 1, Round 1.

CLIENT

Sound NSW (NSW Government, Office of the 24-Hour Economy Commissioner)

LOCATION

Various venues, NSW

COMPLETED

2024

Our scope

MDA carried out on-site acoustic assessments of six live music venues, collaborating with each venue operator and developing tailored recommendations for each.

We carried out work at the Avoca Beach Theatre, The Factory Theatre, Red Rattler Theatre, The Metro Social, Newcastle Hotel and Adamstown Bowling Club. The scope included a detailed plan outlining the measures required to reduce sound emissions from each venue.

Challenges

Due to the tight timeframe of the grant process, the full assessment and reporting for all six venues had to be delivered within four weeks of engagement — a fraction of the time this scope of work would normally take.

MDA met this timeframe by drawing on its broad technical and staffing resources and running a tightly managed project plan, delivering detailed, venue-specific advice on time without compromising quality.
