Tōtara Haumaru
Tōtara Haumaru (The Sheltering Tōtara) is a multi-storey healthcare facility at North Shore Hospital, designed with a strong focus on patient and family-centred care.
The 19,600m² facility includes 150 inpatient beds, eight operating theatres, four endoscopy suites, and a range of supporting spaces. The facility was created to significantly increase surgical capacity and meet the healthcare demands of a rapidly growing population.

Our Scope
Marshall Day Acoustics was engaged by the Waitematā District Health Board at the start of detailed design to take over the acoustic design of the project. We played a key role in refining the acoustic strategy and gaining stakeholder approval for updated design criteria. As part of this process, we developed auralisation to demonstrate construction noise and vibration impacts on adjacent sensitive buildings within the hospital campus.
Throughout the build phase, Marshall Day inspected critical acoustic details and carried out testing to ensure the design intent was achieved.
CHALLENGES
Healthcare facilities demand exceptional acoustic performance to support patient recovery and wellbeing. The design required careful management of noise from mechanical services, medical equipment, and building occupants to meet stringent healthcare acoustic criteria. The 450m² indoor healing garden – a central feature of the biophilic design approach – required acoustic treatment to balance the desired natural ambience with privacy and speech intelligibility requirements in adjacent clinical spaces.
