North Sydney Olympic Pool Redevelopment
In 2019, North Sydney Council engaged Brewster Hjorth Architects to oversee a major redevelopment of the iconic, heritage-listed North Sydney Olympic Pool, which has been the setting for 86 world swimming records since it opened in 1936.
The redevelopment upgrades facilities across the site to meet current needs, including outdoor and indoor pools, a new grandstand, gym, community facilities, a kids’ interactive water play area, and food and beverage offerings, while retaining the pool’s art deco heritage fabric.

Our Scope
MDA’s scope covered room acoustics, sound insulation and external noise control for the redeveloped facility.
MDA has provided input from the initial design, planning submission, through subsequent scope changes and the construction period.
CHALLENGES
The site is closely overlooked by a number of high-value residential towers, requiring careful external noise control to protect residential amenity alongside the acoustic needs of an active aquatic and community facility.
The project is an iconic art deco design situated in a prominent location on Sydney Harbour, facing much scrutiny. MDA worked closely with the team in retaining the site’s original character while accommodating state of the art modern facilities.
