Open Country Community Stadium / Te Whare Hui Ora

The Open Country Community Stadium / Te Whare Hui Ora is an $11 million, 2,368 m2 indoor sports and recreation facility on the grounds of Matamata College.

It houses a double-court gymnasium and community spaces for netball, basketball and volleyball, serving both the college and the wider Matamata community.

CLIENT

Matamata-Piako District Council

LOCATION

Matamata, New Zealand

COMPLETED

2026

Our scope

We led the acoustic input across the project life cycle, from the original resource consent application through to construction and commissioning. Our assessment of noise effects supported Matamata-Piako District Council's consent application, and we presented expert evidence at the council hearing.

During construction, we reviewed the building envelope and mechanical services design for Foster Construction, designed the acoustic boundary fence, and carried out noise commissioning against the resource consent conditions at practical completion.

Challenges

A stringent night-time noise limit applied at neighbouring homes, well beyond what the initially proposed Kingspan facade and roof could achieve for typical gymnasium activities. We recommended building envelope upgrades and sought less stringent consent limits, supported by ambient noise measurements, keeping the facility viable without pricing out the community use it was built for.
