Hornsdale Wind Farm

Hornsdale Wind Farm is a 315 MW renewable electricity project consisting of 99 Siemens 3.2 MW wind turbines.

The site is located between 8km and 24km north of Jamestown in South Australia. It was constructed across three (3) stages from 2015 to 2017, when it became fully operational.

Our scope

MDA was engaged by Siemens to provide full consulting services for the project, in accordance with relevant environmental and regulatory standards. Our services included pre-construction (background) noise monitoring, assessment of operational noise, and post-construction compliance noise monitoring.

Sound Power testing was also conducted on installed wind turbines in accordance with IEC 614100-11 ed 3.

CHALLENGES

A common feature of wind farm noise is the influence of extraneous or residual noise. The risk was mitigated using a number of methods, including detailed background noise measurements at dwellings (prior to operation) as well as monitoring at intermediate locations (during operation), between the turbines and dwellings. Combined with the measurements at dwellings, the data from the intermediate locations assisted in identifying periods when noise levels at a dwelling were attributable to the wind farm.
