Kinleith Mill - Noise Emissions Compliance Measurements

Oji Fibre Solutions engaged us to measure noise emissions from Kinleith Mill in Tokoroa following the permanent closure of the mill's PM6 paper machine in mid-2025.

With paper production discontinued, the mill now focuses solely on bleached softwood market pulp, changing its overall noise emission profile.

Our Scope

We carried out an environmental noise survey around the mill boundary, measuring against the site's resource consent noise performance standards. We updated MDA's acoustic model of the site (originally built in 2011) to reflect changes to on-site buildings, then compared the survey results with the consent limits to confirm the mill's ongoing compliance under its new, pulp-only operating profile.

CHALLENGES

Removing the mill's paper-making line changed which plant and processes now dominate the site's noise emissions, so measurements needed to establish a fresh baseline rather than simply re-checking a known noise source. We reviewed historic site geometry against current conditions and re-ran the acoustic model to make sure our assessment reflected the mill as it now operates, not as it did before the closure.
