Melville Senior High School Performing Arts Centre
The Melville Senior High School Performing Arts Centre is a purpose-built facility designed to support both performance and teaching. It features a flat-floor auditorium with 300 retractable seats and an operable acoustic wall, allowing the space to be reconfigured into separate teaching areas for drama and dance. Additional amenities include a green room, foyer and gallery. Construction commenced in January 2018, with the centre officially opening in November 2019.

Our Scope
Marshall Day Acoustics was engaged to provide full acoustic and theatre systems design for the project. Our services covered room acoustics, sound insulation, building envelope design, audio-visual infrastructure and technical theatre systems, ensuring a space that supports both high quality performances and flexible daily use for teaching, rehearsal, and school events.
CHALLENGES
The site’s location - elevated and directly adjacent to Leach Highway, a major freight route to Fremantle Port - presented significant acoustic challenges due to high levels of external noise. Our early involvement in the project allowed close collaboration with the design team on critical decisions relating to building orientation and design of the building envelope and façade. This enabled the development of an efficient and cost-effective acoustic design that effectively mitigated environmental noise without adding complexity or cost to the build.
Alongside the acoustic considerations, the project had a tight budget - common in education sector developments. MDA worked with the project team to deliver tailored, value-driven solutions that preserved core functionality of the venue. This collaborative approach ensured the school received a high-performance, flexible facility that met both budgetary and operational requirements.
