SH2 Roundabout Options - Bay of Plenty & Rotorua

Beca engaged us to assess noise and vibration effects for roundabout upgrades at high-risk intersections on two separate State Highway 2 corridors: five sites south of Katikati as part of the Waihī to Ōmokoroa Safety Improvements, and the Wainui Road intersection near Ōpōtiki, together with a further roundabout upgrade at the SH30/SH33 intersection near Rotorua. The projects sit within the NZ Transport Agency's Safe Network Programme, which targets New Zealand's highest-risk rural highways.

CLIENT

Beca Limited (subconsultant to NZ Transport Agency Safe Network Programme)

LOCATION

Bay of Plenty & Rotorua, New Zealand

COMPLETED

2022

Our Scope

We measured existing ambient noise at each site and modelled future traffic noise against the relevant district plan and NZS 6806 criteria. We also assessed construction noise and vibration from the proposed works and recommended mitigation measures and management plans to support each resource consent application.

State Highway 2: Waihī to Ōmokoroa roundabout

CHALLENGES

Each roundabout needed a separate assessment against a different district plan and set of sensitive receivers, from rural Western Bay of Plenty dwellings to properties bordering State Highway 2 near Ōpōtiki. Whether each upgrade counted as an 'altered road' under NZS 6806 shaped the noise criteria and mitigation approach at every site.
