Southern Cross Station Redevelopment

With its striking visual appearance, the AUD $350 m redeveloped Spencer Street Station is a distinctive landmark and a world-class transport facility. Through a sequence of staged deliveries, Victorians were able to experience these outstanding facilities first hand, with the station remaining fully operational throughout the construction phase.

Civix Nexus is the consortium responsible for the Spencer Street Redevelopment Project which was the largest PPP (public-private partnership) undertaken in Victoria at the time. Marshall Day Acoustics was engaged as a design consultant by Leighton Contractors, a member of the Civic Nexus consortium.

Our Scope

Marshall Day Acoustics was involved in all aspects of the project including:

  • Facade and roof sound insulation design

  • Diesel and electric rail vibration impact assessment and control

  • Architectural acoustics and mechanical services noise control

  • Construction noise and vibration monitoring and assessment

  • Design specification and performance verification of the station public address system

A feature of the project was interaction with the Independent Reviewer acting on behalf of the operator, Spencer Street Station Authority.

CHALLENGES & OUTCOMES

One of the most striking features of the new station is the innovative 'waveform' roof, spanning 43,000m2 and scaling 23 metres at its highest point. This unusual roof profile limited the use of conventional cladding materials. Additionally, as the roof is located over an operating rail environment, its structure and cladding was also designed so that any impact on the station's operations was minimised during construction.

The new station brings together the best elements of a modern, international style station, creating a user-friendly facility that is comfortable, convenient and safe for passengers. The station has become a functional arrival point for international, interstate, regional and suburban visitors, able to comfortably handle 30,000 passengers an hour in peak periods.
