HomeGround: Auckland City Mission

HomeGround is the Auckland City Mission purpose-built central city hub.

The project involved demolishing the existing buildings on site, with exception of the Former Prince of Wales Building, and constructing a nine-level, 12,500 m² facility. The new building incorporates a range of integrated health and community services, including a medical facility on the ground floor, administration and office spaces on the second floor, detox facilities on the second and third floors, residential apartments from levels four to eight, and a conference facility on the ninth floor.

Our Scope

MDA provided acoustic advice throughout the design and construction phases, covering internal and external sound insulation, reverberation control, and mechanical services noise. During preliminary design, an auralisation was presented to key stakeholders at Auckland City Mission, helping to establish acoustic design criteria and offering valuable insights into operational considerations.

The building features a hybrid structural design, with concrete used for the lower floors and cross-laminated timber (CLT) for the upper levels. Due to limited acoustic data available for CLT in this context, we collaborated closely with the design team to ensure full compliance with acoustic requirements while maintaining cost efficiency.

CHALLENGES

As New Zealand’s first large-scale high-rise cross-laminated timber (CLT) building, the project required innovative acoustic solutions for an untested structural system at this scale. The mixed-use nature of the facility – combining residential apartments, medical facilities, community dining, and activity spaces (including music and drama) – demanded high-performance sound isolation between very different use types within a single building.
