Mātai Medical Research Institute

Mātai Medical Research Institute Trust developed a new campus on Childers Road, Gisborne, for advanced MRI and neuroscience research into concussion, cardiovascular health and child development.

Designed by Kingsbeer Architecture and built by Dawson Building Co, the facility gives Mātai a purpose-built home to grow its research, education and community programmes in Tairawhiti.

Our Scope

We carried out an acoustic design review for Kingsbeer Architects, setting criteria for background noise, reverberation time, rain noise and speech privacy across the research and clinical spaces. Our review covered internal sound insulation between rooms and building services, and the building envelope's performance against external noise and rain.

CHALLENGES

MRI research and clinical imaging spaces need very low background noise and strong speech privacy between consulting and research areas, while the building's roof and envelope had to control rain noise for a region with heavy rainfall. We set criteria across all of these areas so the finished building could support sensitive imaging research without acoustic compromises.
