Northern Private Hospital
Northern Private Hospital is located within the Riverlee New Epping Health Hub, adjacent to Northern Hospital. The public and private hospitals are connected via a link bridge to allow for easy patient transfers.
The new development by Ramsay Health Care spans six levels and includes 70 beds, operating theatres, medical imaging, pathology, consulting suites, a sleep study unit and a cardiac catheterisation lab. The hospital features a new communication system, making it Victoria’s first ‘quiet hospital’. In line with Ramsay’s commitment to sustainability, the project incorporated solar panels, cooling beams, efficient lighting and double-glazed windows.

Our Scope
MDA was engaged to provide full acoustic design services, including preparation of acoustic reports included in town planning submission and development of acoustic design criteria. The hospital included interfaces between a number of competing uses that required detailed consideration of sound insulation and speech privacy, including recommendations for sound absorptive treatments, glazing, partitions, and facade treatment.
Detailed assessment of the mechanical services design was critical to achieving appropriate noise levels within noise-sensitive spaces. Our involvement in the project extended throughout the design and construction stages through to commissioning at project completion to demonstrate compliance with the acoustic performance criteria.
Challenges
The Covid-19 pandemic created significant challenges for the design and construction stages of the project. We worked diligently with the team to clearly communicate the acoustic design requirements and offer solutions to ensure that the acoustic design was implemented as required. Detailed site inspections and commissioning as the project reached completion ensured that the acoustic treatments were diligently implemented and effectively achieved the specified criteria and acoustic performance.
The project reached practical completion in August 2023, 2 months ahead of schedule, and opened to the public in February 2024.
