Parakiore Recreation & Sport Centre

Construction is underway on Christchurch’s largest Sports Hub, a 30,000m² facility designed to deliver world-class sports and recreational activities to the region. The hub features international-standard sports facilities including competition-grade pools, recreation pools, hydro-slides, nine indoor netball and basketball courts, a gymnasium, an indoor running track, and a central core that anchors the variety of activity spaces. The project is committed to accessible design with a strong community focus, ensuring the facilities will appeal to users of all ages and abilities.

Our Scope

Marshall Day Acoustics was engaged to provide acoustic consulting services for the development. Our involvement focused on ensuring appropriate acoustic separation between activity zones; specification of absorptive acoustic treatments for large, reverberant spaces; detailing of complex flooring systems; laboratory testing of perforated ceiling systems to ensure the recommended products met the acoustic performance requirements.

CHALLENGES

A common challenge in buildings that house multiple concurrent activities is preventing noise from one space negatively impacting others. This is particularly critical when noise sources include dropped weights or heavy footfalls, requiring the design of flooring systems to attenuate impact sound. Large open-plan areas intended for crowds and loud activities also require the integration of absorption systems to manage noise levels and reduce reverberation time.

In this case, consultation was required regarding the detailing of complex flooring systems and the performance of proposed ceiling solutions. Laboratory testing was necessary as manufacturer data can include margins of error and may not reflect in-situ performance or take into account any construction tolerances.
