Tākina Wellington Convention & Exhibition Centre

Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre is a large-scale development located near the Wellington Waterfront, adjacent to Te Papa National Museum.

Designed as a world-class venue, it is adaptable for hosting conferences, exhibitions and various events. The centre spans three floors, offering a range of spaces including exhibition halls, meeting rooms, hospitality areas, and a large auditorium. Tākina symbolises Wellington’s commitment to biculturalism, sustainability and accessibility. It is envisioned as a hub for public, business and tourism activities, contributing to the city’s vibrant cultural landscape.

Our Scope

Marshall Day Acoustics was involved in the project from concept design phase through to commissioning. Our scope included sound insulation, an extensive review of mechanical services (both internally and externally) and design of reverberation control.

CHALLENGES

Given the large, flexible internal spaces at Tākina, which can accommodate events of varying sizes and simultaneous bookings, sound insulation between floors was critical, while maintaining an open and accessible flow. The lobby spaces, which serve as public circulation areas, were designed to balance the need for a vibrant and welcoming environment, while preserving the comfort and privacy of users in other parts of the building. Achieving acoustic performance without compromising on sustainability or architectural vision, required close collaboration with the project team.
